Description

A Queen Cage is a small enclosure used in beekeeping to safely contain a queen bee during transport, introduction to a new hive, or while awaiting release. It protects the queen from potential aggression by worker bees until they become accustomed to her scent.

🐝 Types of Queen Cages:

  1. Plastic Queen Cage (e.g., JZs BZs Cage):

    • Lightweight, reusable, and easy to clean.

    • Vented with a candy plug for timed release.

  2. Wooden Queen Cage (e.g., Benton or Three-Hole Cage):

    • Traditional, with mesh sides and a candy compartment.

    • Often used by queen breeders and for postal transport.

  3. Push-In Cage:

    • Used directly on comb to confine the queen temporarily.

Key Features:

  • Candy Plug: Worker bees eat through it over a few days, slowly releasing the queen.

  • Ventilation: Ensures airflow and visibility.

  • Durability: Reusable and designed to minimize stress to the queen.
